An Algolia alternative built for online stores
Algolia is a powerful search platform for teams with developers. ThunderBar is ready-made search for online stores: install the module and AI search works from day one; rules and revenue analytics come with the Pro plan. Here is how they compare, from Algolia's own public pages (checked on 17 October 2026).
Which one fits you
ThunderBar fits if…
- you run an online store on OpenCart or WooCommerce, or you have a product feed
- you want it working without a developer: install, sync, done
- you sell in Greek, or your shoppers type Greeklish
- you want a fixed monthly price, not a bill per search
Algolia may fit better if…
- you have developers to build and maintain the search interface
- you need a general search API for apps, documentation or content beyond a shop
- you have very large traffic and a dedicated budget for search
What ThunderBar does differently
AI search on every plan
Semantic search is included from the Starter plan. At Algolia, NeuralSearch is on the Elevate plan, with a custom price.
Greek and Greeklish
ThunderBar understands Greek, Greeklish and text typed with the wrong keyboard layout. Algolia lists Greek with stop words but no plurals; Greeklish is not stated.
Ready for OpenCart and WooCommerce
A module for OpenCart 3, with full Journal 3 support, and a plugin for WooCommerce. OpenCart is not in Algolia's integrations list, and for WordPress there are only third-party plugins.
Priced by pageviews, not by keystrokes
From €35 a month billed yearly, with limits on products and pageviews. Algolia's free tier includes 10K searches a month, then $0.50 per 1,000 searches, and with search as you type every keystroke counts.
Linked stores and image search without code
Linked stores is a setting in the panel; at Algolia, multi-index search is coded by a developer. Image search and "see similar" are on the Pro plan; at Algolia you build them yourself with a third-party image service.
Your data in the EU
ThunderBar runs on its own servers in the EU, with a data processing agreement (DPA).

Moving from Algolia to ThunderBar
Install ThunderBar
OpenCart: Extensions → Installer. WooCommerce: upload the plugin. Any other store: one line of code.
Your catalogue syncs
From the module's feed or the product feed you already have. No manual indexing.
Tune the results
Add synonyms and banners, and on the Pro plan rules to pin, hide or boost products.
Switch off the old search
Check the results (on OpenCart first in preview, visible only to you), then remove the previous search code.
Questions
Is ThunderBar a replacement for Algolia?
For online stores, yes: ThunderBar brings the search window, the results inside your store's search page and the analytics, so there is no interface to build. ThunderBar is made for product search; if you use Algolia for apps or content beyond a shop, it is not a replacement for that.
Does ThunderBar charge per search?
No. Plans are limited by products and pageviews, not by searches or keystrokes.
Can I try it before switching?
Yes. There is a free trial, and on OpenCart the search can first run in preview, visible only to you, before your shoppers see it.
